How can therapy help?

Therapy offers support, problem-solving skills and better coping strategies for depression, anxiety, relationship troubles, unresolved childhood issues, grief and stress. Our goal is to partner with you to reach your full potential and remove whatever is keeping you stuck.

  • A better understanding of yourself, your goals and your values
  • Skills for improving your relationships
  • New ways to cope with stress and anxiety
  • Managing anger, grief and other emotional pressures
  • Changing old behavior patterns and building new ones
  • Stronger self-esteem and confidence

What to expect

When you arrive, your clinician will greet you in the waiting room. The first session is an intake questionnaire and interview: your counselor gets to know you, your needs and your goals, and you set treatment goals together. After the first visit, sessions are typically 50 minutes, usually weekly or every other week.

Therapy can be short for more immediate concerns or longer for more complex ones. Many clients start with a phone call; others book online.

Approaches

Evidence-based therapy approaches we use.

Your therapist matches the approach to you. These are the methods our clinicians are trained or certified in.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)

Practical skills for noticing and changing the thought and behavior patterns that keep anxiety, depression and other concerns going.

Trauma-focused CBT (TF-CBT)

A structured approach for children, teens and their caregivers after a traumatic experience.

EMDR

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, which helps the brain process distressing memories so they carry less charge.

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)

Skills for managing intense emotions, tolerating distress and improving relationships.

Motivational interviewing

A collaborative conversation style that helps you find and strengthen your own reasons for change, often used in substance use care.

Play therapy

For young children, play is the language of therapy: a way to express feelings and practice new skills with a trained clinician.

Questions

Therapy questions.

What kinds of therapy does Vitality Counseling offer?

Individual therapy for adults, adolescents and children, in person in Madison and Starkville or by telehealth. Our 9 therapists use evidence-based approaches including CBT, trauma-focused CBT, EMDR, DBT, motivational interviewing and play therapy, matched to your concerns and goals.

What happens in the first therapy session?

When you arrive, your clinician will greet you in the waiting room. The first session is an intake questionnaire and interview: your counselor gets to know you, your needs and your goals, and you set treatment goals together. After the first visit, sessions are typically 50 minutes, usually weekly or every other week.

How long does therapy take?

It depends on what brings you in. Therapy can be short for more immediate concerns or longer for more complex ones. You and your therapist set goals together and revisit them as you go.

Do I need a referral for therapy?

No. Many clients are referred by a physician, friend or family member, but a referral isn't required.

Can I combine therapy with medication?

Yes. Therapy and psychiatric medication management happen under one roof, so your therapist and prescriber can coordinate your care.

Does insurance cover therapy?

Many of our therapists accept Blue Cross Blue Shield, and some accept Aetna and other plans. Coverage varies by clinician and plan; see which clinicians accept your plan. Self-pay and superbills are also available.
